The Great Toilet Debate

Every time a client asks about toilets, the same three brands come up: Toto, Kohler, and American Standard. They want to know which one is worth the money.

After installing and fixing hundreds of them over the years, I have clear opinions. Let’s cut through the marketing noise.

A bathroom built right once is a bathroom you forget about. That’s the point. Your toilet should be one of those things you never have to think about again.

My Honest Ranking After Real-World Use

1. Toto — The Performance King

Strengths:

• Best flush power and bowl cleaning

• Quietest operation

• Excellent build quality

• Great customer support

• Longest lifespan

Weaknesses:

• Higher price

• Some models have complex parts

Toto is what I install when the client wants the best and is willing to pay for it. Their Drake and Drake II lines are workhorses.

2. American Standard — Best Value

Strengths:

• Very reliable

• Good flush performance

• More affordable than Toto

• Widely available parts

• Solid warranty

Weaknesses:

• Slightly louder than Toto

• Design is more basic

This is my go-to recommendation for most families. Excellent balance of performance and price.

3. Kohler — The Stylish Middle Child

Strengths:

• Beautiful designs

• Good innovation (some models)

• Strong brand reputation

Weaknesses:

• Inconsistent performance across lines

• More expensive than American Standard for similar performance

• Some models have had reliability issues

Kohler looks great in the showroom but doesn’t always deliver the same long-term reliability as the other two in my experience.

Real Job Comparisons

Family with kids: American Standard or Toto. Durability matters.

Guest half bath: American Standard. Great value, looks clean.

High-end master bath: Toto. Worth the premium for quietness and performance.

I’ve replaced failed Kohler toilets at year 8 while American Standards from the same era were still going strong.

Key Features to Look For

• Gravity flush vs Pressure assist — Gravity is quieter and more reliable long-term.

• Siphonic vs Washdown — Siphonic is what you want.

• Seat quality — Soft-close is worth it.

• Height — Chair height (16.5"+) is much more comfortable for most adults.

My Recommendation by Budget

Under $250: American Standard Cadet or similar
$300–$450: Toto Drake or Kohler well-reviewed models
Premium: Toto with Washlet if you want luxury

Installation Tips

• Always replace the flange and supply line while you’re at it.

• Use quality wax ring or rubber gasket.

• Make sure it’s properly secured — rocking toilets lead to leaks.

• Test flush multiple times before closing everything up.

The Bottom Line

Toto wins on pure performance.
American Standard wins on value.
Kohler wins on looks.

For most people, American Standard gives you 90% of the performance at 70% of the price. That’s usually the smartest choice.
